It's been an electrifying week and a half for the Centennial Colts Women's Volleyball team. After a shaky start with back-to-back losses to Seneca and Algonquin, the Colts have stampeded back, stringing together three straight wins. Their winning streak began in Ottawa with a breakthrough victory over the La Cité Coyotes, gaining serious momentum with a stunning five-set comeback against the nationally-ranked Durham Lords.
The win over Durham was nothing short of a defining moment. Coach Andrew Mallory could barely contain his excitement afterward, saying, "That was a huge victory for us. They've recruited really well this year, and with nationals on their home turf, they're a real force. When we dropped that second set and were down 0-2, I thought, 'Here we go again.' But the girls rallied, winning the next three sets and delivering one of the best performances I've seen this season."
The Colts then capped off Homecoming weekend with yet another impressive showing, toppling the Canadore Panthers in four sets—a win that marked Coach Mallory's first career victory over Canadore. Grace Dockstator emerged as a standout in the match, adding a spark off the bench with 4 straight aces to the team's inspired play.
Now sitting at 3-2, the Colts are riding high as they prepare for a highly anticipated showdown against their cross-town rivals, the George Brown Huskies (2-3).
But Centennial isn't letting its recent success lead to complacency. Despite George Brown's recent loss to Canadore, the Colts know better than to underestimate their opponents. With the Huskies playing on their home court, Centennial will be stepping into hostile territory. Coach Mallory knows his squad will need to bring sharp focus and composure if they're to keep their winning streak alive.
The Colts have been notoriously slow starters this season, often dropping the first set and having to claw their way back. They'll be leaning on CL Viloria, who ranks in the top five for scoring and kills per set, to ignite their offence. The Huskies, however, boast a strong defense, ranking second in the league in digs per set. They do struggle with unforced errors, ranking second in the league with 94 miscues, something the Colts will look to capitalize on. Centennial's size advantage could be the difference-maker; if they can assert themselves at the net and force the Huskies into mistakes, they'll be in a prime position to extend their winning streak.
Tonight's game gets underway at 6:00 PM at the Alex Barbier Gymnasium on George Brown's St. James Campus. Can't make it in person? Catch all the action live at OCAA.Live or on the Huskies' YouTube channel.
