Women’s Volleyball Find 3rd Consecutive Win Over Fleming

After a season opening loss in straight sets to the Loyalist Lancers, Centennial Colts women's varsity volleyball head coach Matthew Cheung said his team was feeling the nerves of the first outing and that they would be alright. Three games later, his words are ringing true.

The Colts (3-1) dominated the Fleming Knights (1-5), winning in straight sets (25-6, 25-11, 25-19), at the Athletic and Wellness Centre, for their third consecutive win.

Centennial took advantage of the Knights' error-filled play, with Fleming having 18 errors on attack attempts to their nine kills.

Cheung admitted that Fleming was not on top of their game.

"(Fleming) had a little struggle with their passing," Cheung said. "They couldn't get into their offense as often and we exploited that."

Meanwhile, the Colts had a whopping 36 kills compared to just 10 errors and also had three service aces. The Centennial women also had 34 assists and five block solos as well.

Tryscelle Lin led the Colts with 12 total points on 10 kills along with a block solo and a service ace. Mari Pikkov chipped in with nine total points on nine kills.

Coach Cheung credited his team for staying calm, especially in rally points.

"We were steady and we weren't too low or too high, with our emotions," Cheung said. "That was a real positive from us." Cheung wants to see big things from his team, but also wants them to learn after each game. "I like to judge them more on what we learn and how we improve rather than how the season goes," Cheung said. "All the players are expecting to be competitive with every team in the league."

The Colts women play next on Saturday Nov. 12, when they play the Algonquin Thunder at the Athletic and Wellness Centre, at 6:00 pm.
