Colts Pitch witnessed one of the bitterest moments of the season when the Centennial Women's Soccer team got eliminated after a 2-1 loss to George Brown on Saturday.
Makayla Cabral opened the score for the visiting team early on in the first half. In an instance, our Women were able to react quickly, with Nailah Rowe slotting in the equalizer 10 minutes after. Sadly, Elisabeth Virelli was able to get the second one for the Huskies with only a couple of minutes remaining, eliminating the Colts from the tournament.
This was a very difficult situation for the team, especially for veteran midfielder Jessa Braun, who disputed her final college sports game.
"We did what we could, but George Brown was a great team," said Braun during a post-match interview. "It would have been incredible to go to the quarterfinals, but overall, I think our team has come a long way this season, so I think that's the real win."
Jessa joined the Colts this year after enrolling in the Sports Journalism post-graduate program, which is only one year long, so she won't be eligible for the upcoming indoor season.
"I'm just really proud of everyone," added the 24-year-old. "I think the girls will have a killer season this winter."
There's no doubt that, despite the short season, there was a really strong bond between every member of the squad. That was especially true at the end of the game when they gathered near the bench to give supporting words to one another after the loss.
Overall, it was a very tight game from the beginning, with both teams sharing momentum and generating clear chances in the boxes.
Playing under very windy conditions, the Colts seemed a bit surprised at first as George Brown pushed forward from the start, making it difficult for our girls to keep possession. It was during those first 15 minutes that the Huskies got the lead with Cabral's goal.
Following the initial shock, Centennial managed to regain control of the ball and the team established on the visitors' side of the pitch.
The reward to that reaction came in the shape of Nailah Rowe's equalizer, who, once again, reassured her position as The Colt's top scorer (10 goals). By the end of the first half, it was clear that the girls were closer to getting the second one, having doubled their rival's attempts on goal.
However, soccer is not always fair, and after the 70-minute mark, fatigue had set in.
This was a factor that affected both teams, but up to that point, it was Centennial that had made the biggest effort. Under these new conditions, the Huskies started to gain momentum, translating to several clear chances that kept goalie Rosalie Benedict very busy during the last 15 minutes of the game.
Unfortunately, and only with two minutes remaining, Virelli found the back of the net for George Brown, leaving the Colts almost no time to react.
Despite that, the team managed to get one more shot during the added time that went slightly wide just before the final whistle. It was a sad way to end the tournament, sure, but we are very proud of our girls' performances throughout the season.
We will come back stronger next year. Go Colts!
