SCARBOROUGH – A two goal effort from Zoe Harrington led the Fleming Knights to a 3-2 victory in their season opener over the Centennial Colts at AWC Turf Field. Marissa Wayne scored the other goal for Fleming.
Meanwhile, Centennial had goals from Nicole Warren and Nicole Tentativa.
Fleming wasted no time in getting the scoring started as Harrington fired a low shot past a diving Michelle Philip in the 7th minute. It looked like the score would stay that way until a great individual effort by Kali Zheng led to her being taken down in the penalty area.
Warren did not miss the opportunity, finding the low right corner past a frozen Taylor Sytsma in the 39th minute to tie the game at one heading into the half.
The tie wouldn't last for long though. Four minutes into the second half (49'), Philip ran out of her net in an attempt to clear the ball. However, her clearance attempt went right to Harrington, who made no mistake, lobbing the ball into the right corner past a helpless Philip, who was in no-man's land.
Warren had a chance to tie the game in the 54th minute on a brilliant shot with her left foot heading into the top left corner but Sytsma was up to the task, preserving the Knights' lead.
The score would stay that way until the 87th minute when Marissa Wayne took advantage of a partial breakaway and scored on a beautiful lob past a diving Philip to take a 3-1 lead.
Tentativa scored in the 89th minute to bring the Colts to within a goal but it ended up becoming too little too late.
The Colts fall to 0-2-0 on the season as the Knights improve to 1-0-0.
