In a battle of two teams in the OCAA East that were 1-8 entering this game, it was the Centennial Colts that came up short on Wednesday night, losing to the Loyalist Lancers in straight sets (25-21, 25-22, and 25-20) at the Athletic and Wellness Centre to start off the second half of the season.

For the Colts, it is their ninth consecutive loss after a win to open the season and remain winless at home. The Loyalist Lancers are now 2-8 and avenged their season opening loss to the Colts, which ended in five sets.

Middle Justin Smith and outside Sev Libramonte led the team with seven points, two blocked shots, and five kills each. Outside/middle Ronald Ho, with eight digs, and setter Matthew Wallace, with 21 assists, led the Colts in both of those categories in the loss.

The Centennial men played from behind for most of the match as Loyalist got off to a 5-2 start in the first set. Despite the Colts' efforts to catch up, including a 5-0 run halfway through the set, the Lancers pulled through, taking the set, 25-21.

In the second set, it was a back and forth affair as both teams laid it all out on the floor. However, despite the Colts taking a 16-15 lead, Loyalist came up with critical plays down the stretch as they took the second set, 25-22.

The Colts fell flat at the start of the third set as the Lancers scored five straight points and later scored six unanswered to take a 16-5 lead, the biggest deficit for Centennial the entire match. Despite a valiant comeback attempt from the Colts men (cutting it to four), the Lancers hung on, taking the set, 25-20, and the match.

Despite the loss, there was a bright spot for Centennial as freshman hitter Edvaldo Hire made his first appearance as a member of the Centennial Colts late in the third set. His presence seemed to spark life in the Colts players as they scored four straight points late in the set to cut the lead to four (22-18).
