COLTS 2-1 @ 22nd Annual SLC Varsity Vikings Invitational

The Centennial Colts Men's Basketball team headed into their first tournament of the season at St Lawrence College in Kingston Ontario for their 22nd annual affair.  The team drew a tough group having to play against Vanier College as well as the OCAA previous seasons Bronze and Silver Medalists, Lambton and Mohawk respectively. Centennial performed well in the tournament to start off the season going 2-1.

September 24 2016 Game 1 vs Lambton College.

Lambton College is coming off their amazing OCAA 2015/2016 season where they captured a Bronze Medal this past spring.  Lambton returned this season with their dynamic crafty lightening quick guards from Detroit Michigan. Guard Branden Padgett led his team in scoring with 24ppg, 5.7rpg and was named the 2015-16 OCAA Men's Basketball League Scoring Champion and West Division First – Team All Stars. Jason Marshell, his backcourt countryman, is a veteran guard with good leadership and experience averaging 14ppg, 4.8rpg. This game was a true test for the Colts to open their 2016-17 campaign. The first quarter was a back and forth contest with both teams making big plays.
The Colts were down after the first quarter, 18 to 16 after a slow start. The second quarter was completely different.  The Colts scored 32 points and held Lambton to only 13 to take the lead 48 to 31 at the half.  The third quarter was a little more competitive with the Lambton Lions clawing their way back into the game, however, it wasn't enough.  At the end of 3rd the Colts still maintained an 18-point lead at 74 to 56.
With 5th year guard AC connecting 5/7 from the 3 -point line and 2nd year guard Josh Mcfarlene scoring 11 points and dishing out 13 assists, the Lions were in a battle that they could not overcome.  Marko Curic had 23 points, 9 rebounds and Paul Walwyn chipped in with 13 points and 3/4 from 3pt line.  2nd year forward Malique Hyde had 6 points, 5 rebounds and 3rd year guard/forward Bailey Burton chipped in with 12 points, 7 rebounds.  Both Padgett and Marshall were held to 12 points and 10 rebounds combined.  The final score was 100-76 for the Colts

September 24 2016 Game 2 Versus Vanier College

Vanier College from Montreal is a CGEP School that has been a dominant program that plays tough defense and executes on offense.  They were missing their starting 6'10 240 center due do to concussion symptoms.  Nevertheless the Colts were up to the challenge.  This game was tight from the start.  Vanier College pressed and played the Colts extremely tough.  At the end of the first half the Vanier College Cheetahs were down 56 to 47.

The Cheetahs started the 3rd in full court zone press to slow down the Colts, limiting their 2nd shots and fast break opportunities.  The Clots seemed frustrated but kept competing.  Both Curic and Hyde fouled out of the game leaving the Colts shorthanded at the forward spot.  5th year guard Alex Hagoriles led the attack with 23pts and Paul Walwyn had 13.  Unfortunately it wasn't enough, the Cheetahs came back and tied the game for an overtime quarter. The Colts fell short and lost 76 to 71.

September 25 2016 Game 3 Versus Mohawk College

Mohawk College is coming off their amazing OCAA 2015/2016 season where they captured a Silver Medal loosing to the CCAA Men's Basketball powerhouse Humber College this past spring.  Mohawk returns this season with their sophomore Hamilton native combo guard Kareem Collins that was named 2015-16 OCAA Men's Basketball Rookie of the Year and the OCAA Men's Basketball West Division Rookie of the Year plus being named on the West Division Second Team All- Stars.  His 6'4 backcourt partner Lamar Barr averaged 14.8ppg, 6.1rpg last season.

This matchup was a tough one for Centennial Men's Varsity in the first quarter.  Colts played a stellar quarter leading the Mountaineers 18 to 12.  The Colts played full court pressure for majority of the first half, stifling the Mountaineers' every possession.  Late first half seemed apparent that Mohawk OCAA All-Star Kareem Collins was injured and couldn't resume playing. Also his backcourt partner Lamar Barr wasn't able to play either do to injury.  So Mohawk had to play short handed and depend on their other players.  At the end of the half the Colts led the Mountaineers 41 to 23.  The 2nd half was just the same like the 1st , where the Colts continued to make Mohawk work hard for every basket.  The Colts increased their 18 point lead to 28 points, the Colts had a balance attack with all players chipping in the box score.  Marko Curic led the attack with 15 points; 11rebounds and 4 blocks, rookie guard out Waare Hassan out of Jarvis C.I scored 12 points and was instrumental with key baskets around the basket.
The final score was 91 to 55.
The Colts finished 5th in St. Lawrence Tournament with a 2 – 1 record.  The consolation final was
between SLC and Niagara College; Niagara College won a close game beating SLC 76 to 70.  The Championship game was won by Algonquin College who played Vanier College in a tight contest.  The final score was 76 to 73.
