The Centennial Colts Athletics program is delighted to announce the hiring of a New Men's Volleyball Head Coach - Clayton Couchman. Coach Couchman will be taking over the program from Coach Adriana Bento, who sat on the Colts' bench from 2018-2022.
Coach Couchman played college volleyball at Fleming College, captaining the Knights for four seasons before graduating with honours in Recreation and Leisure Services. During his time in the OCAA, he was a 3X All-Star, breaking the OCAA single-season and all-time blocking records. After using all his collegiate eligibility, Couchman decided to give back to the program that shaped him, becoming Fleming's assistant coach for 2 years.
With the urge to still play, Couchman set aside his coaching goals to play professionally. After one season with Magnes Spartans of the Canadian Volleyball League (ONE Volleyball), a German club signed Clay to his first professional contract, where he won the Bundesliga championship. Since then, he has played in Denmark, Luxembourg, Mongolia, and Greece.
During his summers, Clay comes home to coach youth beach volleyball in Peterborough with Andrew Hinchey for the past decade and is now ready to continue the spread of this beautiful game.
"It has always been the plan to coach after my playing career finished," says Coach Couchman. "With that chapter closed, I am ready and beyond excited to join Centennial to help bring this Colts program back to championship status. There is massive potential for this program, and I can't wait to work toward realizing some ambitious goals. I knew I would always be passionately involved in this game for the rest of my life, and I'm looking forward to helping other determined athletes reach their goals for years to come."
Couchman takes over a program that has greatly improved in recent years, finishing the season as one of the hottest teams in the OCAA and climbing to #8 in the province after.
Manager of Athletic and Recreation, Darcy Brioux, shared his thoughts regarding the hiring of Coach Couchman "Coach Couchman brings a wealth of experience to the Colts, having previously coached at the collegiate and professional levels, it gives him a unique perspective on the game that will aide us in building our championship program". He continues" We are confident in Clayton's skill, knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm to lead Centennial Men's Volleyball to be a force in the OCAA and CCAA in the years to come."
The Centennial community looks forward to welcoming Coach Couchman and supporting him and the Men's Volleyball team in their upcoming season.
