On Monday, March 12th, Centennial College student-athlete, Kadeisha Powell-Graham, hosted the first, of hopefully many, Centennial Colts Play Days. Powell-Graham prepared a fun-filled morning of activities, some of which included Giant Jenga, Giant Checkers, Giant Connect 4, and inflatable games. With the help of many student volunteers, kids from the Scarborough area and Boys and Girls Club were able to play around and go wild at the start of their March Break! Although the giant activities were a hit, the kids mostly enjoyed the opportunity to interact with the varsity athletes and play sports like basketball and soccer.
The play day was a part of Powell-Graham's Capstone Project, Colts Cares. Colts Cares is a community outreach program that she developed in efforts to give our student-athletes the opportunity to utilize teamwork, give back to the community, and share the Colts spirit. "Our student-athletes were just as excited for the day as I'm sure the children were! Bringing joy to their lives and putting a smile on their faces is all we could have asked for," said Powell-Graham.
Other aspects of the program include the December 2017 event, Colts Against Hunger, in which the student-athletes came together to give back to those in need at the Youth Without Shelter organization. The volunteers, joined by Athletics Manager, Darcy Brioux, and Sports Information Officer, Justin McCaffrey, prepared and delivered many sandwiches, vegetable and fruit platters, as well as beverages to 53 underprivileged youth during the holidays.
Next, up for Colts Cares, the student-athletes will compete in the second-annual Colts Games to cap off an excellent varsity season.
